Didi Benami talks about her post-Idol life at a mile-a-minute, through a balky phone connection. “I know, it’s ghetto, right? Welcome to Hollywood. It’s ghetto living. I gotta open the window to get telephone service in my apartment,” she says, laughing.

“It’s a whirlwind once you get off the show,” says the 24-year-old singer and aspiring actress, originally from Tennessee. “You’re living this crazy life. Then after the tour, if you don’t get signed, you’re on your own again, starting all over. You have an amazing platform to work from, but it’s like, now what?”

Didi has been working to produce an album or EP, which she says she is about halfway done, collaborating with producers and writers like Chris Seefried, Justin Gray, Kyler England and Jason Reeves. She’s also had the advice and mentorship of past finalists. That’s where the yet-to-be-signed singer has tapped into a sense of community.”I’m good friends with Blake (Lewis, the Season 6 beatboxer),” she says. Didi even watched this season of Idol with a group of past Idols who gather at Blake’s on Wednesday nights. “I’ve made good friends with a lot of the other Idols. Ace Young has been helping me. We’re the Idol community!”

Didi, who recently sat on a panel at the Reality Rocks 2011 convention with other finalists, heads to Cancun this month for a charity event hosted by Joey Fatone at the Moon Palace.

Her upcoming album, which she hopes to release in the fall, will portray her style better than her performances on Idol, Didi says. “It’s still singer-songwriter, but there are some songs that are a little more edgy and a little more pop, just different.”
