Didi Benami on Chicago Acoustic Underground: Extraordinary tribute to Rebecca Joy Lear (Audio/Videos)

Chicago Acoustic Underground (CAU) recently released its special podcast episode with musical guest Didi Benami.

Back in October 2010, Didi was in Chicago to attend the wedding of Crystal Bowersox and Brian Walker. She was maid of honor at the intimate wedding held at a club where the couple met.

Officiating the wedding was right reverend Michael Teach, host and founder of CAU. Crystal arranged for Didi to come to the CAU studio to record the podcast.

Didi dedicated the extraordinary show to dear friend and mentor, Rebecca Joy Lear who passed away at a tender age of 18. Didi was accompanied by pianist and also a dear friend, Tony Hays. (I had the pleasure of meeting Tony when I met Didi on the Idol live tour stop in Chicago last August. Such a delightful meeting!)

Didi sang three of Rebecca’s songs: “Lullaby, Home and Gotta get Back” and two of her own: “Don’t” (co-written by Jason Reeves and Makana Rowan) and “Made of Love”.

The live session was hosted by Michael Teach. Also in attendance was the “Walkersox” trio: Crystal, Brian and little Tony.

Didi posted about the podcast feature on her official Facebook in December:

“Mission accomplished. On Christmas Day, CAU released a podcast on Itunes where we honor my dear friend Rebecca Joy Lear who left us too early this month; 5 years ago. Tony Hays (a great mutual friend of Bec and I & incredible pianist) did a podcast back in October when I was in town for Crystal’s wedding.

I am humbled by what prayer, hard work, and faith can do. This year in particular has been a dream. I can’t say THANK YOU enough to the cats @ CAU & to my Lear family for always being nothing but supportive and to all the people that helped make this happen. GOD BLESS YOU ALL. It was the greatest Christmas gift ever.

About Chicago Acoustic Underground:

CAU began as an effort to support original music in Chicago. At the time, Myspace.com was just taking off and Facebook.com was just a gleam in the Internet’s eye. CAU offered an online home for singer-songwriters to share their music when such opportunities were
not the norm.

Eager to create more opportunities for musicians and utilize “new” technology like podcasts, Michael Teach founded CAU along with Jacob Covington and Michael Narvaez.

CAU podcasts were created with a radio-show format, providing close-up interviews with singer-songwriters and their music. A “podcast” is similar to a radio “broadcast”, except the podcast is available online and can be listened to on any Mp3 player or iPod.

Each episode is recorded live at the CAU studio in Chicago. The studio puts musicians at ease with windows overlooking Armitage Avenue. Inside, it’s decorated with house plants, music memorabilia and a wide collection of guitars and hand percussion- not
to mention a bright yellow, mint-condition drum set.

Musicians from Chicago nation-wide have made the trip to be captured on CAU’s podcasts. Touching more folks than just Chicagoans, CAU photos and podcasts reach music fans in over 33 countries.
